Algeria ire at feting of Islamist |

The Algerian Foreign Ministry has asked Saudi Arabia to explain why it invited the leader of a banned Islamist party to a royal function. Hummm, because they are his source of funding? Abassi Madani attended a reception in Riyadh given by King Fahd for Eid al-Adha, the feast of sacrifice. Has anyone seen King Fahd at these affairs, or is his name just on the invitation? Madani was freed last year after serving a 12-year jail term for threatening state security, and later given permission to travel abroad. But he remains banned from engaging in political and religious activities. Those bans work so well. An Algerian Government statement said the authorities wanted to know the "real motive" behind the invitation. It has called on the Saudi ambassador in Algiers to provide an explanation.
