Yasser: He couldn't have been talking about me... |
2002-06-25 |
Yasser Arafat was asked Tuesday if he was the man in question when President Bush called for a change in the Palestinian leadership. "Definitely not," said the Palestinian leader, who went on to express support for Bush's outline that proposed a Palestinian state in three years. "Who? Me? Nah. Musta been... uh... somebody else." Officially, the Palestinian leadership described Bush's ideas as a "serious effort to push the peace process forward." But Palestinian officials have been unanimous in rejecting his call for a change of leadership. "Nah. We already had an election." Other scenarios - persuading Arafat to step down, or making him a figurehead, or conversely allowing him to lead without a formal title in a way that might satisfy the Israelis - have been discounted by the Palestinians. They prefer the idea of waiting until he dies or loses his mind entirely. |
