Chen Shih-Hsin outpointed world silver medallist Yanelis Labrada of Cuba in the women's under-49 flyweight final to win Taiwan's first-ever Olympic taekwondo gold medal. The two fighters fought even in the first two-minute round at two points each. The 25-year-old Chen went ahead to 5-3 in the second round. She kept her points lead in the third round to win her first-ever global title at 6-4. Taiwan won two bronze medals when the Korean-born combat sport made its Olympic debut at the 2000 Sydney Games. Yaowapa Boorapolchai of Thailand narrowly outpointed Colombian Gladys Alicia Mora Romero in the play-off for bronze. Note : CHU Mu-Yen also won the Mens Taekwon-do gold in the 58kg class |

#2 Relax : Medal Count If you look down the list you will see "TPE" with 2 golds. That odd flag is the flag of the Taiwan Olympic Committee. The mainland has a "Fred Sanford" (Elizabeth , I comin' to join ya') moment at the sight of the Taiwan (Rep of China) flag, so the Taiwan gov't compromised so that the athletes could compete. |
