Jobless Claims low last week |

Jobless claims tumble by 44,000 Claims for unemployment insurance fall to 319,000, below estimates as Charley backlog subsides. September 9, 2004: 8:53 AM EDT NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The number of Americans filing for unemployment assistance tumbled by 44,000 last week, the government reported Thursday, coming in well below estimates [the concensus estimate was 345,000] as the backlog of filings from Hurricane Charley subsided. - Part of this may be that newly unemployed people in FL didn't get around to filing unemployment claims because they were busy with other disaster recovery work. Part of it may be due to people getting temporary work in the recovery effort. Or it may be a pickup in the overall economy. Or a mix. Or just a stochastic burp. |
