Cop wounded in clash with Shia procession
2004-11-06
A police constable was shot and injured on Friday when several people taking part in a procession marking Hazrat Ali's (RA) death anniversary clashed with police. Quetta Nazim Rahim Kakar said the district administration had ordered the procession to shorten its route as part of security measures taken by the administration to avoid violence. But the procession disregarded the administration's orders and tried to use its originally planned route. This caused tension in the area and traders and businessmen shut their shops. Traffic also came to a standstill in the Liaqat Bazaar and Meezan Chowk areas and Abdus Sattar Road. Tensions flared as police tried to stop the procession near McCongy Road and a few shots were fired. A constable was shot and injured and he was taken to hospital in stable condition. The Quetta nazim said it took about half an hour to pacify the people and diffuse tensions and the procession continued on its way.
