Pinochet pops a vein
2004-12-18
Gen. Augusto Pinochet was hospitalized after suffering a stroke Saturday, one day after an appeals court delayed a decision on whether to uphold the former dictator's indictment and house arrest on human rights charges. Doctors say Pinochet has suffered several minor strokes since 1998. The 89-year-old former ruler also has mild dementia, diabetes and arthritis, and uses a pacemaker. On Friday, the Santiago Court of Appeals postponed until next week a decision on whether to uphold his indictment and house arrest for the alleged kidnapping of nine dissidents and the killing of one of them during his 1973-90 military regime.

#1  Bah. I don't feel much sympathy for him. He did authorize alot of dirty actions. He was a bastard in the humanrights/cold war sense. I think he used excessive force in breaking the back of the University and international leftist movement in Chile.

OTOH, he was "our bastard", and did off that Castro wannabe Allende, and prevent the enslavement of Chile by the Commies. Which counts for even more. Compare/contrast Chile with Vietnam, cuba or Norkland.

The fact that he beat the Internationalist commies at their own game, and made it stick is just gravy.

On the whole, a "good" guy, but one of the ones that dosen't sit well with me. A pity that the left cannot admit they were beaten, and have to hound him to death.
