2004-12-24
One of the terrorist leaders, Aslan Barayev, the brother of Movsar Barayev, who commanded the seizure of hostages in Moscow at the Dubrovka theater center in October 2002, has been killed in Chechnya, said Major-General Ilya Shabalkin, official spokesman for the Regional Operations Headquarters for controlling the antiterrorist operation in the North Caucasus. "Barayev was eliminated in the Chervlennaya village together with Alikhan Mashugov, the so-called emir of the Chechen capital, Grozny. Aslan Barayev's body was identified by law-enforcement officers," the general said. "The operation to eliminate Grozny emir Alikhan Mashugov and Aslan Barayev was conducted a few hours ago by the servicemen of a combined detachment of the federal troops in the Chervlennaya village," he added.

Mashugov was subordinate to both Shamil Basayev and Aslan Maskhadov, Shabalkin said. "According to intelligence reports, Mashugov had committed numerous murders of law-enforcement officers and residents of Chechnya," he said. According to the spokesman, the law-enforcement bodies in Chechnya have established that the killed militant was personally involved in assassinating two FSB officers and four officers of the Chechen Interior Ministry in summer this year. Mashugov also took part in the murder of the deputy chief of the Grozny FSB directorate this year, Shabalkin said in conclusion.
