| Severe earthquake hits New Caledonia |

| A severe earthquake estimated at 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia early on Tuesday, the Hong Kong Observatory said. The epicentre of the quake, which was initially determined to have struck at 17:20 GMT Monday, was estimated to be under the seabed 440 kilometres east of Noumea, it said in a statement. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. |
