More Australian troops en route to Iraq
2005-05-06
A charter flight with about 200 troops on board is flying out of Darwin tonight, bound for Iraq via Kuwait.

The departure lounge of Darwin International Airport was a sea of camouflage uniforms and long faces this evening as the soldiers prepared to go through Customs.

The Commander of Darwin-based 1st Brigade has farewelled 140 members of Al Muthanna Task group on a six-month deployment to protect Japanese engineers in the southern Iraqi province.

Brigadier John Cantwell says the flight also contains 60 soldiers from Brisbane units, who are relieving the Army's security detachment in Baghdad.

Brigadier Cantwell says the third and final group will fly out in the next week.

"There's about another 120 to go," he said.

"We'll be doing those in the coming week, and that'll see the group complete over in the Middle East, shortly to move into Al Muthanna province to start their tasks."

#1  The only thing better than this is if the Japanese could defend themselves. But I'm thankful they are there.
Thanks Australia, and japan.
