Obasanjo Defends Taylor Asylum Extension |
2005-05-08 |
President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday defended Nigeria's extension of political asylum to former Liberian President, Charles Taylor in a meeting with United States President George W. Bush at the White House. He however expressed the hope that some arrangement could be made in the case to ensure that the course of justice is served. Addressing the press outside the White House yesterday, Obasanjo emphasized the delicate nature of the situation and noted that Taylor's exile to Nigeria in 2003 helped end bloodshed in Liberia. In his own remark, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said: "President Bush is appreciative of President Obasanjo's leadership to help end the civil war and get Charles Taylor out of Liberia. They spoke about the need to continue working together to find a way to hold Charles Taylor accountable." |
