A Pakistani court awarded the death sentence on Saturday to a man for masterminding suicide bomb attacks on Shiite mosques in May 2004 that killed 45 and wounded 129 others. Gul Hassan was accused of organizing the May 7 and May 31 attacks on the mosques in the city of Karachi in which both the suspected bombers, Ali Haider and Akbar Niazi, were also killed. He was arrested two weeks after the second attack. Two accomplices in the attack absconded. Hassan's lawyer Mushtaq Awan said they would appeal against the decision within the stipulated seven-day period.| "We fully expect the Lahore High Court to let him off, if he doesn't die of old age before they hear the case!" |
