Three members of a family of a militant who surrendered to the army were killed in Jammu after a gun battle broke out between police and Indian paramilitary forces, a local news agency reported. Police and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel clashed over the surrender of some militants in the Kalakote region of southern Kashmir. Reports said that two militants from Hizb-e-Islami, Aashiq Ali and Mohammad Farooq, had offered to surrender before the army in Gool tehsil of Udhamur district. Army officials organised a function where the militants laid down their arms, and they were later handed over to the local police. When the police party was leaving with the militants, a BSF patrol stopped their vehicle and objected to the militants surrendering to the army in a BSF-controlled area. They asked the police to hand over the militants so they could organise a surrender ceremony afresh. An altercation ensued after the police party refused. BSF personnel allegedly opened fire and three members of Ashiq Ali's family — his father Abdul Rafiq, mother Zohra and brother Riyaz — were killed. BSF officials have denied their involvement in the killing. A BSF spokesman said that militants might have intercepted the police vehicle in the guise of BSF personnel.
