2005-07-31 |
From Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty In a statement issued on 28 July, the Ulema Council of Afghanistan has called on all opponents of the Afghan government to stop violence in the country, Pajhwak Afghan News reported. The religious scholars specifically called for a stoppage to the killing of their colleagues. Recently, several high-level pro-government ulema have been killed or attacked mostly in southern and eastern Afghanistan. In their statement, the ulema, without naming any country, called on religious scholars of neighboring countries to help prevent the terrorists from carrying out their plans in Afghanistan. Mawlawi Fazl Ahmad Ma'nawi, a member of the council, said that the statement has been endorsed by representatives of ulema from all of Afghanistan's provinces. |
