Kuwaiti women make history
2006-05-26
KUWAIT CITY: Five Kuwaiti women made history on Thursday by becoming the first women to register as parliamentary election candidates in their country, ending a 44-year-old ban on their political participation. Kuwaiti women won the right to vote and run for public office in May last year. The five female candidates are: Rula Dashti, womenÂ’s rights activist, Aisha al-Rasheed, a journalist, Khaleda al-Khader, who holds a PhD in public health, Ghanima al-Haider, a local college professor and Taiba Ibrahim, a writer. Elections are scheduled for June 29.
