 Amman - Jordanian police have arrested a man on suspicion of helping his father kill his three sisters in an "honour killing" 12 years ago. Police discovered the crime after a tip-off led them to a makeshift grave in a backyard in Irbid, 80km north of Amman, said higher criminal court prosecutor Mohammed Abu-Ruman. The man is in his mid-twenties.

He was arrested on Thursday, two days after the grace of his three sisters was found. Abu-Ruman said the man confessed to stabbing his three sisters, aged between 14 and 18. He will face charges for the murders. The coroner's office took two days to exhume the remains of the three women in an attempt to preserve as much evidence as possible, said Abu-Ruman. He said the girls' father had died of natural causes a year after allegedly committing the crime.

Police said the man had told them he and his father believed the girls were "involved in immoral behaviour". The family was living in Iraq at the time. The two men plotted to kill the girls when they returned to Jordan. The men asked the girls to help them dig a 6m-deep hole, telling them it was for an irrigation project. They stabbed them to death the next day and told people the three sisters had gone abroad. The father was married to four women. A day before the murders he convinced the only one of his wives living with him to leave the home. |
