Ukraine approves Yanukovich as PM |
2006-08-06 |
The Ukrainian parliament has approved Viktor Yanukovich as prime minister, ending four months of political deadlock in the country. He will share power with Viktor Yushchenko, the president who ousted him in 2004. The president said he had guarantees from Yanukovich that he would not try to reverse the revolution's pro-Western principles. Yanukovich, who held the prime minister's job before the revolution, gained 271 votes from the 450 deputies in parliament. His supporters applauded his victory and presented him with a bouquet of red flowers. "I am itching to get down to work," he said before the vote. "I've been ready [to serve as prime minister] for a long time," Yanukovich told reporters. |
