Seems that a few thousand years ago, the locals had dammed a local valley and managed to catch most of the run-off from the too-short rainy season. The reservoir was used to irrigate fields, and the area became rich and prosperous; supposedly even the home of the "Queen of Sheba". So they're showing the ruins of the city, and the ruins of the dam, and I started wondering to myself, "Why don't the locals build another dam? Maybe there's not as much rain, but we can build better dams now, and know more about irrigation, too. So why hasn't anyone in the oil-cash-glutted Arab world tried to re-create the success of all those years ago?" |
