Replica American academy gives Jordan's king an authentic school reunion
2006-10-02
Hat tip Joanne Jacobs.
SOME people may remember their schooldays with a degree of sentimentality, others have less rosy memories. But few, if any, seek to build a replica of their school. Yet just beyond the dusty outskirts of Amman, a long-held dream of King Abdullah II of Jordan is slowly coming to realisation as builders put the finishing touches to King's Academy, directly modelled on Deerfield, an elite American prep school in New England.

The king spent three years at Deerfield, graduating in 1980 before heading to the UK and Sandhurst, then Oxford.

He has told many of his halcyon times at Deerfield, believing its secular curriculum - with an emphasis on critical thinking, respect and tolerance - are key elements in producing well-rounded pupils. Not to mention potential leadership material, badly needed in a region beset by conflict. It will cost US$28,000 (about £14,970) a year in tuition fees, but some 30% of the student population will be on a scholarship or endowment.
