Tunis shuts down embassy in Doha over Al-Jazeera 'bias' |
2006-10-26 |
Tunisia is closing down its embassy in Qatar and withdrawing diplomats to protest what it called bias by the Al-Jazeera television channel against the Tunis government, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday. "Tunisia has decided to end its diplomatic representation in Qatar and shut down its embassy in Doha despite the warmth and respect it harbors toward the sister country Qatar," it said. The move follows the transmission by Al-Jazeera of interviews with Tunisian dissident, Moncef Marzouki, calling for "civil resistance" against Tunisian President Zein al-Abidine Ben Ali. Al-Jazeera "ignores truth and objectivity every time it deals with current affairs in Tunisia ... apparently waging a hostile campaign aimed at harming Tunisia," the Foreign Ministry said. |
