Newspaper suspended over 'sexpose'
2006-11-09
MALAYSIA'S internal security ministry has temporarily shut down a weekend newspaper after it caused an outroar with an eye-popping survey of attitudes to sex. The Internal Security Ministry suspended the Weekend Mail's publishing licence, a ministry source said today, after the survey brought howls of protest from Government ministers. The newspaper, part of a stable of pro-government publications, rated the popularity of sex positions among young Malaysians in last weekend's unusually frank survey, including "spooning and galloping", under the headline "You'll be shocked".

Asked when the suspension would be lifted, the source said: "Depending on the Weekend Mail. Maybe they want to appeal to us or whatever. We'll see the reaction after this." The Weekend Mail's daily sister paper, the Malay Mail, in a statement on its website, was also unclear as to when the suspension would be lifted. It and its publisher, the New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Bhd, have apologised publicly for the sex survey
