The endgame:
"The CIA officers watching the monitors in their office in the container could see everything. The deserted beach registered bright white against the dark gray of the sea, and just in from the water's edge were the splayed gray silhouettes of palm trees as seen from high above ... The two men appeared on the CIA monitor as black shadows."

Arlyn Dela Cruz -- Philippine journalist with exclusive access to Abu Sayyaf during the hostage chase
A Rantburger who knows - say she was SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY.
so.. SALT WHAT SHE SAYS

Col. Juancho Sabban -- Deputy commander of southern operations for the Philippine marine corps

Capt. Gieram Aragones -- Intelligence officer leading the hunt for Abu Sayyaf

Alvin Siglos -- Childhood friend of Tilao's who helped the authorities track him down
For some reason no interviews with SpecOps or any Rantburgers were there. So not sure what degree the slant is.

I read the article in the magazine today but understand it is not quite right...

#5  Col Sabban is a straight up officer. The Phil Marines are treated like shit. I would not put it past the Phil Army to tip off the terrorists in an effort to keep the glory away from the Marines. Typical third world crap.

Arlyn is a hack. I would think Mr Bowden would be able to see through her, and by his "friend" comment I think he knows she is not all that she says.

The US Embassy Manila was completely focused in every way to help secure the release of the Burnhams. To say anything less would be false. After 911 the ONLY US civilians held by islamic fanatics were the Burnhams. I hope he interviewed AMBO Richardonne and the other key players to get the embassy part of the story right before his movie deal is done.

#2  I thought JosephMendiola used to be a politician on Guam? Certainly his posts display an innate feeling for rhetorical rhythm and emphasis that give poetic depth to his words... even when the content is beyond my own small understanding.

Separately, I can't remember if Col. Sabban is the one 49Pan respects as a professional or loathes as a self-satisfying, two-faced, deliberate incompetent.

#1  If he's not making this up, I reckon Joe Mendiola is an ex-specops AND a RBer, so his interview would have been a real plus for that article (not to mention very... interesting to read).
