| Attacks in southern Thailand continue despite increased security |

| A wave of attacks by suspected Muslim insurgents killed four and injured 12, police said Monday, despite tightened security for the anniversary of the founding of a Muslim separatist group in Thailand's restive south. Attackers shot and killed the 41-year-old Buddhist man Monday morning while he was working at his rubber plantation in the Bethong district of Yala province, said Police Lt. Col. Jaras Chinaphong. Elsewhere in Yala, a homemade bomb exploded in front of a shop in the Muang district, injuring seven people, said police Col. Phoompet Pipatpetpoom, adding he believed it was triggered by a mobile phone. Yesterday's Rantburg has the details about the other casualties referred to in the first paragraph. |
