Seven killed in Russian air crash
2007-03-18
MOSCOW - Seven people were killed on Saturday and 50 injured when a passenger jet crashed on landing in the central Russian city of Samara, the latest blow to the countryÂ’s aviation industry still reeling from its deadliest year on record in 2006. A twin-engine Tupolev Tu-134 jet operated by regional airline YUT-Air crashed as it landed in heavy weather in Samara, 1,100 kilometres (685 miles) east of Moscow, breaking into pieces and killing seven of the 57 passengers and crew aboard, officials said.
Maybe EADS can get the Russians to buy in to Airbus, then they can close the Tupolev factory and build Airbuses. Everyone wins.
Six people were trapped in the wreckage of the plane for about three hours before being freed by rescue workers. A total of 23 people were hospitalised, while another 27 were treated by psychologists at the Samara airport, emergency situation ministry officials told agency ITAR-TASS.

The crash followed 33 Russian aviation accidents last year that left 318 dead -- a sixfold increase over 2005 -- according to a report by the Interstate Aviation Committee, a joint group involving former Soviet states.

#5  "Six people were trapped in the wreckage of the plane for about three hours before being freed," sounds like something that happened to American Airlines or Jet Blue just recently. Oh, that was due to air traffic control delays, and not a crash. sorry, my bad.

#4  Good lord. I'm awfully glad Mr. Wife hasn't travelled in that part of the world for just about eleven years. We can only hope it was relatively painless and quick for the dead in all those crashes. And that the injured didn't have to spend too much time in Russian hospitals full of drug-resistant TB and unmasked, ungloved doctors.

#3  >Kaylee Frye: Don't pay anybody in advance. And don't ride in anything with a Capissen 38 engine, they fall right out of the sky.<

And we thought deregulation was bad. That's a crash almost every ten days! Crikey!

#1  Russia's air safety record is about equal Iran's crash rate. Maybe they're sharing maintenance facilities and technicians.
