IRAQI POLICE CLEAR CENTRAL RAMADI
2007-03-21
ITM previewed this yesterday, but here it is from CentCom.
RAMADI, Iraq (March 20, 2007) - The Western Ramadi District Police conducted a massive police operation targeting insurgents today in Ramadi.

Coordinating between several stations within his district, Brig. Gen. Khalil Ibrahim Hamadi, chief of the Ramadi District Police, personally led more than 500 policemen as they conducted house-to-house searches in the capital city of Al Anbar Province.
"The Sons of Ramadi work tirelessly to eradicate criminals and bring them to justice," said Khalil. "Today we achieved a noble goal in providing security and stability to our families and the people of Ramadi."

During the 10-hour operation, named Operation Lions of Ramadi, police detained more than 45 suspected insurgents, confiscated propaganda material and discovered several caches containing assault rifles, machine guns, and mortar and artillery shells used to produce improvised explosive devices.

Insurgents utilizing an IED during the operation killed one civilian and injured five. The wounded were transported by local citizens to a nearby Joint Security Station, then evacuated to a Coalition medical facility for further treatment.

#5  I think the Iraqis see what's happening in Washington, and realize their only hope is to show that they're willing to lead in cleaning their house. They're afraid it's only a matter of time before the Americans (and other MNF forces) are withdrawn, and the only way forward is to do as much as possible before that happens. It's VERY good news, but also a reason for us to at least maintain a capable force in Iraq for the next few years until this takes hold permanently.

#4  I'm hoping the bulk of the police were Sunni.

If true, this is a very good sign. If the police had a lot of help from Kurdish or Shia Iraqi Army units, its just a moderately good sign. If it is just a Sunni general hand puppet its not a big deal.

#3  Darth,
I'm quite concerned about Mookie and his boys. They are not going to stay quiet. Iran won't let them, for one thing. Plus, it's just not in their nature. My guess is they may lay low until we leave though (so we don't kill a whole mess of them), then come out to go 'Killing Fields' on the Sunni. (The Kurds may play 'Ollie North' and arm both sides just to keep them concentrated on killing each other and leaving them alone.)

#1  Wow. This is the other shoe we need to have drop: the police being effective and the locals buying into it (the first was the Iraqi Army being competnet and supported by the tribes).
