Sectarian clashes spread in tribal agency
2007-04-10
Sectarian clashes spread from here to more areas of Kurram Agency on Monday, as 21 Shia and Sunni Muslims were confirmed dead since the violence erupted on April 6, officials and residents said on Monday. A Levies soldier was killed when a mortar shell hit the Alizai tehsil headquarters building. Hospital sources and administration officials put the death toll at 21, while close to 200 people were reported injured.

Clashes continued in surrounding areas of Parachinar city, which is “quiet” at the moment, said a senior security official. Fighting was reported in the Pewar, Teri Mengal, Alizai, Sada, Balezkhel, Karma and Parachamkani areas, the official said. Political Agent Sahibzada Anees told reporters that he would use force in areas where tribal elders could not broker a ceasefire. Peshawar Corps Commander Lt-Gen Hamid Khan promised security to the residents of Kurram Agency during a visit to the area.
