G8 supports “legitimate” Lebanese government

In the final communique obtained by AFP after a day-long meeting in Potsdam, the G8 ministers called on Syria to refrain from interfering in neighbouring Lebanon’s affairs. “The G8 gives its unlimited support to the legitimate and democratic government of Lebanon and strongly calls for a rapid solution to the current political standstill and to make progress towards national reconciliation.” The G8 ministers also supported the establishment of a special tribunal for Lebanon to investigate the murder of former prime minister Rafiq Hariri, an issue at the heart of a political crisis that has paralysed the Lebanese government for months. The UN Security Council was expected to vote on Wednesday to decide whether to create a special tribunal.
