Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin who is reportedly a man has written to judges claiming his innocence in the so-called Clearstream smear scandal and said the case was biased in favour of President Nicolas Sarkozy. Europe 1 radio said the 23-page note, widely reported in French media, was sent this week to investigating judges who summoned Villepin for questioning on Thursday for the first time since naming him as a suspect. Villepin is suspected of using intelligence services to try to dig up dirt on Sarkozy three years before the presidential election, which his arch-rival won earlier this year. Villepin denies any wrongdoing. |
