France warns Burmese military against repression of monks
2007-09-26
France on Tuesday warned the military regime in Burma against using force to repress pro-democracy demonstrations in the country which are being spearheaded by Buddhist monks. French Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman Frederic Desagneaux expressed "extreme concern" on the part of his government about threats by the military in Burma (now also known as Myanmar) to put an end to the protests that started several days ago. Desagneaux said that the demonstrations were "spontaneous and peaceful" and they indicated that "the Burmese people can no longer take the deprivation of their most basic fundamental rights".
