2008-01-29
Multi-National Division-Baghdad Soldiers found two weapons caches during dismounted patrols in the Rashid District of the Iraqi capital Jan. 26.

Soldiers of Company D, 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division attached to Task Force Dragon, were patrolling a palm grove in Doura, when they found a hidden cache. Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel removed and disposed of one 105mm artillery round, 15 blasting caps, three grenade fuses, two cans of 7.62mm rifle ammunition and a magazine of 9mm cartridges. After the initial find, Soldiers found another cache.

The second cache of 24 mortar initiators, three rocket-propelled grenades, four sticks of plastic explosives, seven blasting caps, detonator, 300 feet of copper wire, two rocket fins, eight feet of detonation cord and ten machine gun rounds were destroyed along with the first cache. This is part of the ongoing offensive operations in support of Operation Phantom Phoenix to kill or capture Al Qaeda and Shia/Sunni extremists; to deny them rest and sanctuary in Baghdad and the surrounding rural areas.
