At least 51 killed at Baghdad markets
2008-02-01
A female suicide bomber blew herself up at the main pet market in central Baghdad, killing at least 43 people and wounding 78, police said, the deadliest bombing to strike the capital since a U.S. troop buildup began over the summer.

The blast was followed 20 minutes later by a bomb at a bird market in a predominantly Shiite area in southeastern Baghdad that killed at least eight people and wounded 14, police said.

The attacks, which occurred shortly before the weekly Islamic call to prayer resounded across the capital, were the latest in a series of violent incidents that have been chipping away at Iraqi confidence over recent security gains.

#17  "That is whom we are fighting folks. Not just muslims. "

The mind blowing thing about our new successful COIN strategy is that we are PROTECTING the predominately Muslim population from the terrorists. In short: American Solders and Marines are fighting and dying to protect Muslims.

It's working and forwarding America's goals, but the idea takes a little getting used to after 9/11.

#16  Credit to the ops' who did the hard work. This is a way to try and steal the headlines, (we are still frightening terrorists!); probably already planned and awaiting a code word - maybe by broadcasat??>>

#14  Can you really observe Down's syndrome in someone wearing a hair covering and without getting within 30' of them?

that would imply giving Bush credit for the Libi hit. Im not sure why we would do that.

#12  and yes, I DO believe that AQ may be wiring up Downs syndrome sufferers, who dont know whats going on. Esp if their supply of foriegn jihadis willing to do his is drying up.

That is whom we are fighting folks. Not just muslims. Not even just Wahabi muslims. But the scummiest people on earth. Time for the orc picture.

#11  I wonder if this is the 'retaliation' for zapping Abu Laith al-Libi the other day. Al Quaeda does have a track record of making some kind of big bloody mess as soon as they can after one of their 'bigs' gets hit. If so, then it should not be long before these blasts are found to be 'Bush's fault'.

#10  Iraqi sources say they had Downs syndrome, which does have physical symptoms of course.

#9  "they were both retarded"

If not retarded, then certainly mentally ill - because nobody in their right mind would do this. Unfortunately 'mentally ill' seems to apply to a large fraction of the Muslim population. Inbreeding?

#8  both suicide bombers were women

according to the AP they were both retarded; however, there is no good reason to take this last claim at face value since while witnesses may reasonably be able to determine gender or suicide bombers, they can't determine who is retarded

it is also possible they were trying to redeem themselves from 'disgracing' their family honor

#6  I suspect that the 'pet market' should probably be called an 'animal market' because the animals for sale include animals for eating.

#5  What is it about pet markets, anyway?

People who keep pets show empathy. Empathy is as unislamic as you can get.

What is it about pet markets, anyway? They're gettin' blown up regular-like. Anti-Islamic, somehow?
