Indian Army plans to raise two mountain divisions
2008-02-08
The Indian Army will raise two new mountain divisions, with 15,000 soldiers each, which will be tailor-made for operations in the hills of Northern and Northeastern part of the country.

The groundwork on the organisational structure and equipment profile of the two new proposed mountain divisions had started after India's Cabinet Committee on security recently approved this plan, India's leading English daily The Times of India reported Thursday quoting a source in the Indian Defence Ministry. The two new mountain divisions will have integral tactical air mobility assets in the shape of medium to heavy-lift helicopters, The Times of India said.

The approval for the new mountain divisions comes at a time when New Delhi's Northern neighbour China is upgrading its military infrastructure along its more than 4,000 km long boundary with India.

The 1.13-million strong Indian Army has 10 mountain divisions out of a total of 35 divisions. The Indian government has also kick-started infrastructure development programmes, particularly road development along its border with China, the daily said.

#5  RD's map doesn't show Nepal but with what we've been reading about Maoists in that country lately the Indians must be concerned about it.

#4  Yep... the commies are true believers. They have their Unions engage in wildcat strikes at Japanese owned manufacturing plants when the Japanese express interest in increasing investment in India (at the expense of China). Their famous statement of "China's chairman is our chairman" indicates their true loyalty.

#3  RD: With Clinton and Obama fully absorbed with their own political "Change" initiatives and priorities in the States, the communist resurgence in India is destined to suffer delays and setbacks.

It's a little disturbing to realize that India has many Commies in it, IIRC John you related that both old commies and the "newer" Maoist Naxalite peckerwoods were now attempting to subvert India's Great Capitalist Leap Forward!

#1  A wise move. The Chinese will begin pushing the border, pushing it, pushing it, ever so slowly. And when the Indians fight back, it will be portrayed as an insult to the Chinese people, demanding a response.
