2 policemen gunned down in Swat |
2008-05-07 |
A dozen men gunned down two police constables in a busy market in Swat’s Matta tehsil on Tuesday morning, eyewitnesses and officials said. Constables Aziz Muhammad and Sardar Ali were on duty at a bank when they came under fire from the assailants, who fled the scene successfully after the attack. The police officials were rushed to hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. Security forces resorted to aerial firing after the incident — forcing shopkeepers to pull down their shutters — and launched a search operation in the area. . Officials said several suspects were apprehended during the operation, and had been moved to an undisclosed location for further investigations. The killings came on the heels of tall claims made by the ANP-led provincial government of making peace with militants in Malakand. Meanwhile, addressing a delegation of traders from Swat valley on Tuesday, Malakand Deputy Inspector General of Police Tanveerul Haq Sipra said that all possible means would be used to restore peace in the area. Sipra said restoring peace was the foremost priority of the law-enforcement agencies. Lawlessness in the valley had destroyed the tourism industry in Swat, destroyed business and resulted in huge losses to the area’s economy, he added. |
