Wally: Siniora won't resign
2008-05-10
Druze leader Walid Jumblatt has dismissed earlier reports that Prime Minister Fuad Siniora was to step down from his post. The leader of the Progressive Socialist Party said Friday that the resignation of Siniora's government is not on the table but the government is mulling over reserving its previous decisions.

Jumblatt rejected the remarks by Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah that there had been plots to involve the army in war with the resistance movement. He reiterated that no compromise could be reached without endorsement of March 14 leader Saad Hariri. "We continue talks with (Parliament Speaker) Nabih Berri to work out a solution. I don't think that Berri and wise Shia figures agree with what is going on in the country."

Clashes erupted between supporters of rival political camps after Siniora's government outlawed a communications network used by Hezbollah and sacked Beirut Airport's security chief. At least 11 people have been killed in fierce battles in the Lebanese capital, Beirut - which is now under control of the opposition. "Hezbollah has proved itself as a totalitarian party through its recent moves. ..Nobody in Lebanon has even thought of disarming the resistance even for a moment because such an option is impossible," Jumblatt said, adding that, "We only negotiate with Nabih Berri."
