Cuba backs Russia over crisis |
2008-08-11 |
CUBA has backed Russia in its conflict with Georgia, saying Russia's demand for Georgia's full pullout from South Ossetia before agreeing to a ceasefire was "just". "The demand for prior withdrawal of the invaders is just, and our government supports it,'' Cuban President Raul Castro said in a written statement. Mr Castro said Russian troops had been deployed in South Ossetia legally as a peacekeeping force. "Therefore, it is false to assert that Georgia is now defending its national sovereignty,'' he said. Russia sent its tanks and troops to pro-Moscow South Ossetia on Friday in response to pro-Western Georgia's military offensive to take back the province, which broke away in the early 1990s after a separatist war. |

#11 Can we start issueing US passports to Cubans, and then invade with overhwlimg foce, a naval blocka, and set up "peacekeepers" in Cuba? Sure! Imagine the parties in Miami! |

#10 I dunno if I want to see the US invade Cuba. The first thing that'll happen is Congress will shut down all their oil drilling. |

#9 We should issue a UN statement condemning Russia for it's unprovoked attack on it's tiny neighbor and state that we would never do that....first. Then attack, overwhelm, and create a democracy in Cuba. |

#7 Heh! If it's communists doing the invading it's called "liberation". If it's Americans doing the invading it's called "imperialism". |

#6 I wonder if Castro has considered the precedent of a big neighbor brutally swallowing a small bordering country? Time to wet his pants? |
