India flood victims swamp hospitals |
2008-09-02 |
Rescue teams in northern India are struggling to provide sufficient aid to hundreds of thousands of people affected by flooding, with survivors overwhelming hospitals. The Indian military said on Monday that it is sending thousands of extra troops, as well as helicopters and rescue boats, in an effort to provide relief to more than half a million stranded people. Tens of thousands of survivors are sheltering in overcrowded relief camps, more than 12 days after the Kosi river breached flood defences. At least 80 people have died in the flooding, officials in Patna, capital of Bihar state, have said, but the toll is expected to be considerably higher. |
