Gunbattle Kills 4, Wounds 8 Officers In Ingushetia |
2008-09-15 |
Militants battled security forces in Ingushetia, killing four security officers as rising violence threatens to further destabilize the troubled southern Russian region, officials said Monday. Sunday's gunbattle also killed two militants and left eight officers wounded, the Ingush Interior Ministry said. The Interfax news agency, meanwhile, reported that that the deputy chief of regional Federal Security Service was killed in the operation. Criminal group and armed gangs opposed to the Ingush government regularly attack authorities in Ingushetia. Critics attribute the violence to anger fueled by abductions, beatings, unlawful arrests and killings by government forces and allied paramilitaries. Ingushetia borders Chechnya to the west, and violence from Chechnya spills into Ingushetia and other neighboring provinces in Russia's volatile North Caucasus. Chechnya has seen two separatist wars in 14 years though major battles ended years ago. |
