| Afghanistan: Bomb attack kills five in eastern province |

| (AKI) - A roadside bomb killed four soldiers from the multinational coalition force and an Afghan national in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, the US military said. The military did not identify the victims, but most foreign troops serving under coalition force in eastern Afghanistan are Americans. It was the latest attack since the Taliban stepped up their campaign of suicide attacks and roadside bomb blasts against the government and foreign troops in recent weeks. At least 194 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan in 2008, the deadliest year for foreign forces since US-led troops removed the Taliban from power in 2001. The number of attacks on American forces in eastern Afghanistan has risen by around 30 percent this year compared with 2007. The coalition did not say where Wednesday's attack took place or provide any other details. The deaths occurred as US Defense Secretary Robert Gates had meetings in Kabul with President Hamid Karzai and other officials. |
