Swiss lowlands received the most snow for any October since records began.
2008-10-30
Snow flurries throughout the night and early morning caused numerous delays for travellers using Switzerland's rail system on Thursday. A heavy, wet snow snapped trees, which fell across tracks. The most affected regions included Zurich, Schaffhausen in the north and the areas around the Gotthard pass in central Switzerland.

Passengers moving between Spiez and Interlaken south of Bern were forced to take buses when rail service there was interrupted around 7am. Broken branches and trees blocked roads.

Farmers in the Bernese Oberland also awoke to snow-related problems. Damaged fences allowed their cows to wander freely.

According to MeteoNews, the Swiss lowlands received the most snow for any October since records began. Zurich received 20cm, beating a record of 14cm set in 1939.

Especially with Greeks.

#20  "on On the contrary kiddies, you've kept up a lively bander banter talking amoungst amongst yourselves,. keep Keep up the "meatheadedness"; it makes y'all you more predictable."

Your attempts at insults/humor/snark/whatever would have more impact if you could type/spell.

And only genuine Southerners - which you most certainly are NOT - are allowed to use "y'all." With non-Southerners, it's mere pretention.

Shoo, you silly troll - it's past your bedtime and mommy will be coming down to the basement soon to turn off your computer and tuck you in. Ask nicely and she may even bring you some warm milk.

Before she demands yet again that you get off your dead ass and GET A JOB.

#19  So what did you come up with Alstair or Alistaire or whatever you're calling yourself? You've had all day. C'mon. Amuse the meatheads.
Oh, wait. You're already doing that...

#16  So good of us to amuse dear little Alstair, who clearly hasn't a thought in his pretty head... except I assume he's a carnivore, given his fixation with meatheads. I've never liked the thought of headcheese, but I suppose for those not concerned with the risk of prions, and having old-fashioned tastes, it has its appeal.

#14  Oh well, Alistaire. You disappoint me.
Feel free to drop by any time and add nothing to the conversation.

#12  This is good news for the Swiss tourist economy. I was skiing in Crans-Montana (thatÂ’s in French-speaking Switzerland) last year and the snow conditions were pretty terrible. As a more-or-less annual Swiss visitor (IÂ’ve visited three times in the last five years), I can tell you for a fact that their ski-based tourism has been on the decline due to lack of snow fall. Finances willing, IÂ’m hoping to go back next year. So I say: “Excellent!”

A certain number of the Swiss blame this on the much vaulted “global warming” phenomenon. The more thoughtful simply call it “bad weather.”

Oh, and Alistaire? Mach es dir selber!

#11  Just checking back. How's that research coming, Alistaire? I'm looking forward to being educated.

#10  Perhaps he means that if the Helvetti were allowed their route through Allobroges we wouldn't have the dire problems we have today, like trains delayed by snow, hate, and ice cream which melts.

#9  It's the Gore effect by proxy:

On the 29th at 8pm "An Inconvenient Truth" was shown for the first time on Swiss German language public television channel SF2.

12 hours later:
Snow in German speaking Switzerland.

#8  Yo, what's the deal, Alistaire? You doing the research, or what? Us meatheads are waiting for your dissertation.

#7  The trolls sure are going downhill lately, aren't they?

Congratulations, "Alistair" - you actually used some words of more than one syllable.

Too bad you didn't actually say anything....

#6  My one trip to Switzwerland, 1985, was interesting because we were there for the largest snow fall in Geneva in 50 some years. Interesting because I didn't know that Geneva doesn't get much snow at all because of it's lack of elevation. In fact they had just sold off most of their snow removal equipment the year before. 30" of snow screwed things up good and proper. Plane from Zurich was cancelled and we caught the last train that made it.

#5  Enlighten us, Alistaire. I'm sure it will be fascinating.

#4  wow, you dumb meatheads dont have a clue about Switzerland, better stick to bashing heads instead of trying to figure out History

#3  Yes, they were TW. In fact if you get your hands on a copy of the History Channel program Little Ice Age, Big Chill, they in fact cover a bit about Swiss monastery records and how cold it was [although in the end they undermine the program with the usual quip to Global Warming in the last 10 minutes].
Posted by: Procopius2k   2008-10-30 12:35

#2  Mitch, I read that as the previous record for October snowfall in the Swiss lowlands was 14 cm in Zurich in 1939. I'm sure the monasteries were keeping some sort of record starting at least in the High Middle Ages.

#1  They only have snowfall records for *Switzerland* going back to *1931*? What the fuck? That's the heart of Europe, where they haven't had a war since the first decade of the 19th century! There are good American weather records going back to the 1760s in New England!

Something stinks in this story.
