Turkey detained 15 suspected al Qaeda members in an operation on Wednesday in Turkey's largest city of Istanbul, the state-run news agency Anatolian said. More suspects could be taken into custody, Anatolian reported, quoting unnamed officials.On Wednesday a Turkish prosecutor charged two suspected al Qaeda members over an attack on the U.S. consulate in Istanbul in July that killed three police officers, Anatolian reported.
Islamist militants have carried out bomb attacks in Turkey in the past. In 2003, al Qaeda militants killed more than 60 people in a series of bombings in Istanbul.
