| Palestinian officials had initially said that 40 people were killed in the attack, but UN sources put the number at 30 killed and 55 wounded this will be front page stuff in the Islamic and terrorism apologist world tomorrow An IDF spokesman said that troops had fired mortar rounds at the school, after militants barricaded inside shot mortar shells at the Israeli forces. "Initial checks ... show that from inside the school mortars were fired at Israeli forces," a spokesman said. "In response, the forces fired a number of mortar rounds into the area." The army said that the bodies of numerous Hamas militants were found inside the school following the attack. we'll see how many report this |

It accused Gaza's Hamas rulers of "cynically" using civilians as human shields. Residents confirmed the account, saying militants were seen staging attacks from the area. In a statement, the Israeli army said an initial investigation found that "mortar shells were fired from within the school at IDF soldiers. The force responded with mortars at the source of fire. The Hamas cynically uses civilians as human shields." The army said two Hamas militants — Imad Abu Askar and Hasan Abu Askar — were among the dead. Two neighborhood residents confirmed the Israeli account, saying a group of militants fired mortars from a street near the school, then fled into a crowd of people in the streets. Israel then opened fire. The residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they feared for their safety, said the Abu Askar brothers were known low-level Hamas militants. |

| #10 Isn't hiding using a school a war crime? Deliberately endangering civilians by hiding amongst them is a war crime, Bright Pebbles. The use of a civilian building by combatants renders it a combatant position, instantly removing its Geneva Rights protections. I'm sure there are plenty Rantburgers who can quote the appropriate chapter and verse. |

Part IV : Civilian population #Section I -- General protection against effects of hostilities #Chapter II -- Civilians and civilian population Article 51: 7. The presence or movements of the civilian population or individual civilians shall not be used to render certain points or areas immune from military operations, in particular in attempts to shield military objectives from attacks or to shield, favour or impede military operations. The Parties to the conflict shall not direct the movement of the civilian population or individual civilians in order to attempt to shield military objectives from attacks or to shield military operations. |

| #8 My best guess is that the short assault rifle you see is most likely the T.A.R. 21. The shower cap or mitznefet covering the helmet flops about taking on an irregular form that is harder to recognize in a shadow or out of the corner of your eye. |
