| Sri Lanka troops enter final Tiger town: military sources |

| Sri Lankan troops on Sunday fought their way into Mullaittivu, the last town held by Tamil Tiger rebels who are holed up in the northeast of the island, military sources said. Troops in small groups entered the western edge of Mullaittivu, the final known urban stronghold of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), via boats, a military official said. The Tigers blewn up a dam and flooded surrounding areas on Saturday in a bid to slow down the military advance towards Mullaittivu town, but troops used boats to enter the town's outskirts, the official said declining to be named. |

| #3 They grew tired of the Tigers' shit. There was a Norwegian-brokered ceasefire that the Tigers used to rearm and retrench. Eventually their violations became sufficiently routine that the govt couldn't even pretend the Tigers had ceased firing. So they decided it was a case of "pay me now, pay me later," and went ahead and spent the resources. The Tigers had burned their support bridges with India when they assassinated Rajiv Gandhi. Nobody else cares about them particularly, with the exception of overseas Tamil communities, who can be mined either voluntarily or using strong-arm tactics. There have been noises of support from Tamil politicians in India, but I think India's taking the position that it's an internal Lanka matter. The UN makes gets the usual case of projectile diahrrea about the civilian casualties, but since the U.S. isn't involved at all doesn't go far. |
