"We call on the new Israeli government (of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) to recognize the two-state solution, stop building settlements and remove all obstacles from the West Bank to allow the Palestinians to resume dialogue and reach a solution with the new government," he said.
Abbas said he discussed the Arab peace initiative, explained the steps Palestine will implement to apply the peace initiative and the means to deal with the new Israeli government to the Iraqi president. "We expressed our concerns to the Iraqi president including Palestinian unity and dialogue. We hope that Palestinian unity will be achieved as fast as possible because without it there will be no political progress," he said and added, 'We also have Iraq's support' in this process.
Abbas said he also discussed the issue of Palestinian refugees stranded on the Iraqi-Syrian border.
