At least 100,000 people have marched through the British capital to demand an immediate end to the Sri Lankan military offensive against fighters from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Protesters in London on Saturday demanded a truce in the Indian Ocean island, saying that civilians were increasingly being placed in danger by the conflict. "As they increase the onslaught, more and more civilians are dying. They don't differentiate between civilians and Tigers," Khalyan Ganeshamoorthe, one of the protesters, told Al Jazeera.
The ethnic Tamil community in Britain numbers around 250,000 to 300,000 people and in recent weeks it has organised several large protests in London to put pressure on the British government, the former colonial power in Sri Lanka, to act. | |
