US believes Pakistan rapidly expanding nukes | ||

WASHINGTON: Pakistan is rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal, raising questions in the US Congress whether proposed military aid to the country could be diverted to its nuclear programme, The New York Times reported late on Sunday.
According to the report, “Pakistan’s effort to build new nuclear weapons has been a source of ... concern in Washington, because the country is producing more nuclear material at a time when the US is focused on trying to assure the security ... weapons.” The paper said the administration’s effort was complicated by Pakistan’s production of “an unknown amount of new bomb-grade uranium”. It noted the Obama administration had communicated to Congress that its intent was to assure that military aid was directed towards counter-terrorism. “But Mullen’s confirmation that the arsenal is increasing seems certain to aggravate Congress’s discomfort,” it said.
