Iraq: Bomb attack hits Baghdad market
2009-06-02
[ADN Kronos] At least four people were killed and another 13 injured in a bomb attack in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Monday. An Iraqi police official said the bomb exploded at the Rasheed fruit and vegetable market in Baghdad's southern district of Dora shortly before 8 a.m. local time.

The same market was the scene of a car bombing last month that killed 15 people - including three US soldiers - and wounded nearly 50.

Sectarian tensions remain high in Dora, which is a mostly Sunni neighbourhood with some Shia enclaves.

"All of a sudden there was an explosion. People were torn apart and killed and wounded. Why? For nothing," said one witness, who gave his name as Abu Haider.

"Do you see an American soldier here? Or an Iraqi soldier? There are just traders."

The number of Iraqi civilians killed by violence fell to its lowest level in May since the 2003 allied invasion, according to figures from the Ministry of Health.

But American forces in Iraq suffered their highest casualties last month than any month since September 2008.

History shows again and again that the counter-intuitive approach of aggressively attacking is the safest one (for the attackers.) Hunker down and mark off the days on your calendar and chances are too high that you won't finish marking it.
