Three Iraqi policemen shot dead in Mosul
2009-09-25
[Iran Press TV Latest] At least three Iraqi policemen have lost their lives in the latest string of terrorist attacks targeting security agents in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

In the first incident, two members of Iraqi police personnel were gunned down on Thursday when unidentified assailants opened fire at their checkpoint on Ghazi street in central Mosul. The armed men fled the scene unscathed after the incident, according to eyewitnesses.

Security forces cordoned off the area after the attack and launched an investigation to look into motives behind the terrorist move.

Gunmen, meanwhile, broke into the house of an Iraqi police officer in western Mosul city and sprayed him with bullets.

An Iraqi police source, seeking anonymity, told Voices of Iraq news agency that the attack took place Thursday in al-Ibor district in the west of Mosul. He added that the attackers managed to escape to an unknown place.

A city with a volatile ethnic mix of Sunni Arabs, Kurds and Christians, Mosul remains the scene of frequent shootings and bombings, and the US commanders regard the once cosmopolitan city as the last urban bastion of al-Qaeda in Iraq. The capital city of Iraq's Nineveh province is situated some 396 km (250 miles) northwest of Baghdad.

#2  Iraqi army as well, LH. It's been a tough nut to crack but imho we have done better w/them then we thought we could. Every month we seem to be incrementally pulling more and more out of the scene, which is a good thing.

#1  The Iraqi forces still have a long conflict ahead of them, but it appears they are mostly able to deal with it themselves.
