Hoffman: 'I will reach out to Scozzafava'
2009-11-01
With liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava suspending her campaign in New York's 23rd congressional district, Conservative party candidate Doug Hoffman tells NRO that he will reach out to her in the campaign's final days in order to bring conservative voters together to defeat Democrat Bill Owens. "I'm certainly going to extend my best wishes to her," says Hoffman.
"The assemblywoman made a very difficult decision for the good of the Republican party. I hope to reach out to her by the end of the day and thank her for making this decision."
"The assemblywoman made a very difficult decision for the good of the Republican party. I hope to reach out to her by the end of the day and thank her for making this decision. It's important for her supporters to know that I'm the conservative Republican in this race. We all need to make sure that we don't have my Democratic opponent going to Washington."

Hoffman says that he hopes that both the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and the New York State Republican Party will throw their weight behind him as soon as possible.

"I'm overwhelmed that Republican leaders in the House want me to caucus with them," says Hoffman. Now, he says, is time for Republicans to also help support him with advertising, since he says that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is pouring thousands into Owens's coffers.

Turnout on Tuesday, says Hoffman, will be crucial to whether he wins. "I need Dede supporters to know how important it is to go out and cast their vote on November 3rd," he says. "The Democrats are pumping over $1 million in negative ads against me this week, with the help of the Working Families Party and ACORN. They're sending in ground troops to take this away from the Republicans. It's important for both my supporters and Scozzafava supporters to know that if they vote for me, they're voting for less taxes and less spending. If they don't vote for me, that means that they want someone who will be working hand in hand with Nancy Pelosi in Washington."

"We're still fighting," says Hoffman. "We're still the underdog."

Thinking toward the future, Hoffman says that if he wins, he will "work very closely" with Scozzafava "as she represents the constituents of her district."
