US officials: New focus on striking US, the West |
2010-05-08 |
The failed bombing in New York's Times Square is a possible signal that militant leaders in Pakistan have shifted their focus to targets in the U.S. and other Western countries instead of sticking to their home base, according to U.S. counterterrorism officials. The attack, they also warned, could be only the first by terrorist groups that seek to avoid detection by using simpler methods that are more independently planned. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly. |

#3 Likewise, they could easily set up a 'bot to tell when suspects made serious financial changes, bought travel tickets, purchased weapons, etc. Any event that puts the traveler into a fragile state that requires them to go revisit religious institutions, such as the death of a close family member. If they start out secular or something like it, they may decide to go religious all of a sudden. If they jump into the middle of a religion instead of learning about it as they grow up, they can be made to believe all sorts of crazy stuff. |

#2 Major Hasan was practically sending up flares to let everyone know he had gone radical. There are none so blind as those who will not see. |

#1 I doubt they are able to pull this off, as such, with local talent. The biggest risk are those already in the US, who have been here for some time, and are radicalized, either here, on when they travel to Pakistan. The FBI could easily set up profile standards that would identify those most as risk for going radical. For example, Major Hasan was practically sending up flares to let everyone know he had gone radical. Likewise, they could easily set up a 'bot to tell when suspects made serious financial changes, bought travel tickets, purchased weapons, etc. |
