| Yemen sentences Somali pirates to death |

| A Yemeni court has sentenced six Somali pirates to death and jailed six others for the hijacking of an oil tanker. The Yemeni ship was seized by the pirates in April last year, but was recaptured by Yemeni forces. On hearing the sentence, the Somalis shouted from the dock that there had been no evidence produced, and no witnesses allowed to testify. In recent years hundreds of ships have fallen prey to heavily armed gangs of Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden. The pirates were found guilty of killing two of the oil tanker's crew. The men, aged between 18 and 47 demanded the right to appeal against the sentence. |
