Man gets 8 years for re-entering U.S. through Ariz. |
2010-05-22 |
A Mexico City man who was caught re-entering the U.S. after being deported twice before has been sentenced to nearly 8 years in federal prison. The U.S. attorney's office in Phoenix announced on Friday that 34-year-old Arturo Ramirez Garcia received a 70-month term after pleading guilty to attempted re-entry after deportation. He also was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge James Cacheris to two additional years because he was on supervised release from an earlier re-entry after a deportation conviction where he served two years in prison. Ramirez was caught on June 2, 2009, after jumping the border fence into Nogales, Ariz. He had been deported just weeks before after completing the prison term. He also had previous convictions for attempted burglary, drugs, and re-entry after deportation. Reentry after deportation has long been the 'serious' immigration offense. Deportation is not just being kicked across the border, but an official bar to reentry. |

#1 ...sentenced to nearly 8 years in federal prison. Except now the the taxpayers of Arizona will now have to support this schmuck. But maybe that is what he was shooting for. Is there not some remote, uninhabited island where these guys can be sent? The only way off is to swim and the closest land is maybe 500 miles away. |
